Photography. Bagels. And Conversation.

Last week I was invited to take a look inside the Museum of Photographic Art’s new exhibition, “Point/Counterpoint,” which originally began at The Getty three years ago, and focuses on our neighboring border culture.

The exhibition showcases work from nineteen Hispanic photographers, from all different regions of Mexico. Their work demonstrates the power of culture, creative artistry, and current events. From photography showcasing personal pain and struggle, to works representing unique ideals, this exhibition is certainly an array of thought provoking pieces, that takes you on an emotional journey, through the lenses of these artists.

In the words of MOPA’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, Deborah Klochko, it is necessary “to redefine photography and get photography out of the frame...it is important to tear down the wall...and art does that, art speaks across culture, across languages, and tears down borders.” This is exactly what this showcase does, Point/Counterpoint truly gets photography out for the frame, it sparks inspiration and becomes the conversation.

These artists were able to emphasize, as well as represent a multitude of themes, including motherhood, violence, the machismo, wealth and social status, current crisis, tradition, and many more.

Point/Counterpoint is a wonder to see and an amazing collection provided by the MOPA. The exhibit will run until February 2018, and in addition, the museum has scheduled three panel discussions in relation to the themes, supported by the photography in the exhibition. The dates and topics are listed below. Please be sure to witness this amazing exhibit for yourself!
